Overseas Singaporean Unit

The Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) was set up in January 2006 under the Prime Minister's Office. Based in Singapore, the role of the unit is to address issues relevant to Overseas Singaporeans and coordinate multi-agency programmes and initiatives aimed at engaging the Overseas Singaporean community.

Some of the OSU efforts include:

  1. Organising programmes to keep the Overseas Singaporean community apprised of the latest economic, political and social developments in Singapore

  2. Providing a channel for Overseas Singaporean to communicate their aspirations; and

  3. Developing channels to facilitate the return of Overseas Singaporeans who wish to do so.

Lee Foundation

Lee Foundation is a charitable foundation in Singapore created to aid "the advancement of education, medicine and cultural activities; helping the poor; and assisting victims of fire, flood and famine", It also funded other philanthropic work. It was founded in 1952 by philanthropist and businessman, Lee Kong Chian. Since its creation till 2009, the Foundation donated S$400 million to various causes, regardless of race, language, religion, nationality, and geographical location. Seventy-five percent of that amount went to education.

The generosity of the foundation has earned them many accolades such as the Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award by the National Arts Council for several years, and the National Volunteerism and Philanthropy Award Special Recognition Award in 2004.
